‘I
take my inspiration from the world around me, a china tea
cup in a charity shop, a puddle on the ground, a piece of
fruit sliced open, a fragment of wallpaper...’
Sam
has a hands-on approach to her work and always carries a sketchbook
with her to record any ideas as they emerge. These initial
sketches are then realised in the studio, carved initially
in plaster and then cast in earthenware clay.
‘I
feel it is important for my work to be beautiful, functional
and tactile. I want the work to be touched, used and enjoyed.'
Sam
graduated from Central St. Martins College of Art and Design
in July 2000 after completing both a foundation and a degree
in Ceramic Design.
Soon
after her graduation Sam exhibited at the New Designers event
in Islington, London where she gained recognition for her
innovative ceramic chandelier design, which appeared in Blueprint
magazine in September 2001.
Since
then she has expanded the business and has established a studio
in Hackney where she now produces and continues to develop
her collection. Sam is currently supplying shops and galleries
nationwide with her products and has recently started to export
to Europe, America and Japan.
